Welcome

wayne

Welcome to my first blog.  I don’t really have a specific plan for what I want to do with this, it’ll probably just be a place for me to write about random things that pop up during my journey as a photographer.  I was never much into writing diaries as a kid, so updates probably won’t be very regular.

Anyway, thanks for reading.

PMA 2010

wayne

I went to the PMA 2010 show this past week.  For those who’ve never heard of it, the PMA, which used to stand for Photo Marketing Association, show is a convention where a lot of the big players in the photo industry like to show off their newest gear.  At least that’s what it used to be.  This year the show felt a lot smaller than one I went to a few years back,  heck Canon wasn’t even there, and most of the big guys had already announced their newest stuff before the show even started.

Over Thanksgiving, instead eating too much turkey, I went to Machu Picchu.  A gallery and a few more words after the break.

New Lensbaby Optics

wayne

SF_test-1

On the same day that I was doing that self portrait, I was also testing a couple of new optics I got for my Lensbaby.  A fisheye optic and a soft focus optic.  Neither of these types of lenses would be something I would use very often, so it was never worth it to buy expensive full fledged auto focus ones.  However, once in a while I would see a shot that makes me wish I had one of these lenses, so when Lensbaby released these optics recently for very reasonable prices (both together were under $250) I snapped them up.  Test shot gallery after the break.

Self portrait

Me on blue background

Normal I don’t like self portraits for obvious reasons (I ain’t that pretty). However, I had an idea for a shot a couple nights ago and I didn’t have a model around. I think it turned out pretty well, but I still don’t like pictures of myself. I always think I look strange in pictures.

Pasadena Wedding

wayne

jkrutherford-2

A few images from a wedding I shot a couple of weeks ago.  I wanted to title this post Fall Wedding, but being in LA the pictures don’t really convey Autumn.  On the other hand the wedding was in Pasadena and it still amazes me how many great shoot locations there are in Pasadena.  Turn any random corner in the old town area and you’re likely to find some old building, park, or even just a nice brick wall.  There were a couple more locations I wanted to shoot at for this weddings, but we just didn’t have the time.

Gallery after the break.

Lightroom Camera Profiles

wayne

I use Adobe Lightroom to adjust my RAW images and when Adobe introduced the ability to use different camera profiles I played around with them as any camera geek probably would.  At that time I found that I preferred the standard profile to the custom camera ones, so I promptly forgot all about them.  Until recently that is.  (The following is really only meant  for camera geeks)

Update: After some more research I realized I made a mistake when I created the profiles.  I’ve uploaded new profiles that were made correctly.

RadioPopper

radiopopper units

I just got a new toy.  A set of RadioPoppers.  If you don’t know what they are, read on.   This isn’t a review,  I haven’t really used them yet (I just got them yesterday).  It’s more of a first impression.

Short Explanation:  RadioPoppers lets you control off camera wireless flashes using radio frequency (RF) instead the infrared light that the flashes natively use. Continue reading
